Social work is a profession for individuals who have a strong desire to change and improve the lives of others. Medical and public health social workers provide aide to those affected by chronic, acute or terminal illnesses. This work with patients, families and caregivers to ensure that the patient will be well-cared for when he/she leaves the hospital.
Most social work careers require an advanced degree, such as a Master’s of Social Work. All 50 states have licensing requirements as well. Plus, in order to practice, you must be a registered Licensed Clinical Social Worker
While social work is an incredibly rewarding career, it can also be exhausting. There is a high burn-out rate for social workers, although medical social workers tend to have a lower turnover rate than other specializations. Employment for social workers is expected to grow much faster than average over the next eight years. Medical social work is also the highest earning social work specialization according to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics.
